As a professional portrait photographer I’ve worked with numerous women in business from the Brighton and London area and most of them ask me the same question:
“Magdalena, what’s the difference between headshots and brand photography?”
So I decided to write this blog because personal branding portrait photography is so much more than just traditional business headshots taken for a profile picture on LinkedIn or social media.
Beyond the boring business headshot
Don’t get me wrong, we all need a good quality headshot taken with a clean (not distracting) background where you are looking straight into camera. In my recent blog post I shared 6 secrets of good LinkedIn business headshots if you wish to learn more.
Most of the business headshots are taken indoor but there are many creative ways to capture engaging, impactful yet soulful portraits vs boring headshots (3 different locations for your business headshots).
I personally use my Brighton and Hove house studio where I invite clients for relaxed, authentic and yet business-friendly photoshoots. Or I use any other location suggested by you with plenty of natural light (your office, outdoors, co-working or meeting room).
The traditional headshot is more straight forward photoshoot, and can last 30 min to up to 1 hour and doesn’t require much posing or advance preparation.
As well, it is a good starting point if you are starting up your business with a tight budget.

So you might ask now: “what is personal branding photography?”
Word “branding”, “brand” or “personal brand” is such a buzzword in the online world nowadays.
For me as a professional photographer, it’s all about creating bespoke, impactful, soulful, story telling yet engaging portrait images of you, your brand and your business.
But it’s more than just pressing the camera button.
My ultimate goal is to capture your personality, your energy, those sparkles in your eyes, the big bright smile, your passion, the long term vision you have for your brand and more…
I am talking about a bank of high quality on-brand portrait images which you can use on your website, blogs, publication as well as a social media content and marketing material, lasting for a whole year (which you can repurpose again and again).
As a female photographer I love combining lifestyle portraits, capturing behind the scenes shots of your business, showcasing your energy by photographing you in your element, whether it’s in front of the laptop or having a 1:1 client meeting. And yes this includes capturing beyond boring business headshots.
For that reason the brand photoshoot requires more investment in terms of time and energy. Most of my clients opt for all day (4 hours long) photoshoot with multiple locations and outfit changes. Some other clients prefer a slightly shorter 2.5hours session but having then done twice a year. Learn more about my Brighton & London brand portrait photoshoot packages and prices.
