'Paint With Me' large abstract workshop in Brighton Lawrence Art Studio
Magdalena Smolarska
When I first started painting this abstract piece on large canvas it didn’t feel like a “magical effortless dance of colours and shapes across the canvas”.
Quite the opposite!
The painting felt hard. It felt flat. Something was missing, but I didn’t know what!?
The more I tried, the more I got frustrated with it.
What you don’t know is that I’ve been working on this painting since 2021!
Half way through I hit a creative block. I gave up on this painting. Until a few weeks ago…
As I was tiding up my art studio I found this half-finished painting. I hung it on the wall. Turned the canvas upside down and waited for inspiration. I stood in front of it for a few minutes and then started painting. After an hour of work it looked even worse.
I took a deep breath. The truth is . . .
we all get stuck. It’s a crucial part of the creative process. We need walls to push against in order to become stronger, to evolve and grow.
As I took a deep breaths, I closed my eyes, grabbed a brush and started painting as music floated from the speaker behind me.
At this point I stopped caring about finishing this painting and I let go fully.
When I opened my eyes I saw something that blew my mind.
I saw the emerging shape of a bird.
But how did this happen? I can’t draw (I thought… in case you don’t know me, I am an ex-accountant, left 9-5 job to persuade my creative living as a professional Brighton based portrait photographer).
As I continued painting, my mind shifted into new territory and the painting took on a life of its own.
My friend, this is where we grow.
This is where the creative flow happens.
And I want to share that with you.
I run regular “Paint With Me”intuitive abstract on large canvas painting workshop in a professional Lawrence Art Studio, Brighton & Hove (all art materials including large canvas).
This isn’t a typical art class back at college or high-school. This isn’t a “paint by numbers” class or “copy how I paint” approach.
In this painting class we will do things differently:
We will paint intuitively!
We will paint big!
We will get messy!
We will free ourselves from limiting beliefs!
Who is this class for?
This is a safe space for anyone! Even those who think they aren’t creative or can’t paint or draw.
Also, this is a great opportunity for creative types who haven’t picked up a paintbrush in a while but are longing to express themselves through art.
We can play and feel like a kid again without worrying about the end result. Nobody will judge what we create together. We are all on a journey to find our inner artist.
